Wii Party Station in the flesh, er, plastic

July 17, 2007 on 8:13 am | In News | No Comments

When you hear about the Wii Party Station by Nyko for the first time there’s a moment where you think how ridiculous it is, but when you see it, you realize it could serve some purpose. An utterly ridiculous purpose, but a purpose nonetheless. Is it designed for “family fun” Wii play — no. It is clearly designed for a bunch of guys sitting around and having a party.

The unit has four removable can holders which have liquid built inside of them so it can be refrigerated or frozen to keep drinks cold, a storage unit underneath, and a removable chip holder. All of this makes for super easy cleaning. There is a fan for hand drying — like a bowling alley. And four displays for keeping score if you’re tracking who won which games (assuming you’re playing various games). The non-corporate line would be to use those displays to keep track if you’re playing the Mario Party drinking game so that nobody goes overboard — but that’s a story for another time.

The unit runs off AA batteries and holds 4 Wiimotes (a hybrid unit with the Nyko Wiicharge Station built into this would be sweet in the future). The unit looks like it would sit in a dorm room coffee table or a house shared by a bunch of guys. Is it a little ridiculous? Sure. But it doesn’t take a stretch of the imagination to see it being useful to certain demographics — and the Wii is all about the demographic spread.

The trouble with most games consoles, is you can’t modify the game code when it’s running. Sure, you can use tools such as Datel’s own Action Replay game enhancers to input all sorts of cheats and enhancements, but there’s no straightforward way for amateur programmers and techie tinkerers to get inside the disc drive’s memory, investigating how it works and trying out modifications and tweaks you’ve programmed yourself. Thankfully, if you’re a Wii owner Datel has come to the rescue with Drive Doctor, the ultimate aid for the hardcore tinkerer and amateur programmer. With Drive Doctor for your Nintendo Wii, you can gain a unique insight into the under-the-bonnet operation of your console, examining, analysing and altering the Wii drive’s memory…

Drive Doctor connects to your PC via a high speed USB (cable supplied). It allows you to view and modify the DVD drive’s memory in real-time. Drive Doctor’s powerful ARM7 processor, running at 60MHz, makes read and write operations quick and easy. You can then review its innermost operations, watching your Wii software in action through Drive Doctor’s PC application. You can even add data of your own, all from your PC. Drive Doctor’s memory and command views give you a unique insight into the innermost workings of your Wii’s drive memory, and even lets you make on-the-fly adjustments. You can read status, write data, send control commands, report the drive status and more. By injecting your own code into the data stream, you can create your own effects and experiment with modifying the program. It’s fun! And as the Wii home brew scene grows and prospers, the device will also come in handy for playing freely-downloadable software straight from your console.

Fitting Drive Doctor requires a little soldering, so make sure you have your precision soldering iron handy (not supplied). Full fitting instructions are supplied. It’s a fairly simple task, requiring you to connect just five wires. After that, the unit just clips to the back of your console. It remains in place even when not in use - just unplug your USB cable and you can use your Wii in the usual way. It’s styled to match the console, and completely unintrusive when not in use.

Wii-themed Car Headed to NASCAR

July 17, 2007 on 7:58 am | In News | No Comments

NASCAR 08

Nintendo of America announced today that it has formed a partnership with NASCAR’s Roush Fenway Racing and driver Greg Biffle, wherein a Wii-themed Ford Fusion car will debut later this summer. Undoubtedly a smart move for Nintendo, this new venture could not only give the hot system even more brand recognition, but given Nintendo’s inevitable presence at the events, it could also be a, dare I say it, driving force behind their ultimate goal of expanding the video game market. Of course, NASCAR isn’t exactly new to the world of video games, as EA and other publishers have been producing NASCAR titles for years, but this new announcement can only serve to help further merge the two cultures (not to mention come as quite a shock when Xbox 360 and PS3 owners see the Number 16 Wii car on the starting line in NASCAR 08). For more information, you’ll find the official press release below:

Concord, N.C. - July 16, 2007 - Nintendo’s record-selling Wii™ video game system takes video gaming to a whole new level with a partnership with Roush Fenway Racing and NASCAR Nextel Cup driver Greg Biffle. Biffle will debut the Wii-themed Ford Fusion at Watkins Glen in August and then provide an encore performance at Dover’s Monster Mile in September. Nintendo’s partnership with Roush Fenway Racing is the company’s first endeavor with NASCAR and it is excited about the possibilities it brings.

“Partnering with Roush Fenway Racing further demonstrates how Wii is bringing gaming to the masses,” says George Harrison, Nintendo of America’s senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. “Like going to a NASCAR race, playing Wii is a family event. Everyone can enjoy Wii regardless of his or her gaming knowledge and experience.”

Biffle has one Nextel Cup and two Busch Series wins at Dover International Speedway as well as one Craftsman Truck Series win at Watkins Glen. Biffle looks to improve upon those stats in the Wii Ford Fusion later this season.

“I’m excited about this partnership with Nintendo and the Wii system,” said Biffle. “I just got one myself and I love the boxing game. I’ve always been a fan of boxing and with Wii, it’s a workout. I really get into it. I’ll be driving the Wii car at Watkins Glen and Dover. I’ve got a pretty good record at Dover and I’d love to get the Wii car up front in both races.”

Team owner Jack Roush is pleased to add Nintendo to the list of power brands that have chosen Roush Fenway Racing for their entry into the sport.

“We have been fortunate at Roush Fenway Racing to add several well-respected and recognizable brands to our list of sponsors,” said Roush. “The addition of Nintendo’s Wii as a valuable partner to Roush Fenway is an asset sure to produce multiple benefits both on and off the track. I understand this is Nintendo’s first venture in NASCAR and I know our team will do everything in their power to make it a positive one.”

Bleach heading to Nintendo Wii and DS

July 7, 2007 on 7:26 am | In News | No Comments

Bleach

SEGA is set to bring Bleach: Shattered Blade to the Wii and Bleach: The Blade of Fate to the Nintendo DS. Both versions feature a cast of characters voiced by the actors from the BLEACH anime. Bleach: Shattered Blade for Wii and Bleach: The Blade of Fate DS will be released in early 2008.

The Bleach storyline follows fifteen-year-old Ichigo Kurosaki who has the power to see spirits from the afterlife, including warriors known as Soul Reapers. The Soul Reapers are tasked with defending humans from otherworldly beings called Hollows. One fateful day, Ichigo meets Rukia, a Soul Reaper who lends him her powers after she’s injured by a Hollow.

Bleach: Shattered Blade for the Wii enables players to wield the Wii Remote and Nunchuk as their weapons. Bleach: Shattered Blade offers an exclusive storyline created specifically for the Wii with 32 characters to choose from.

On the Nintendo DS, Bleach: The Blade of Fate players will face a variety of opponents as one of 28. Bleach: The Blade of Fate brings a twist to the traditional 2D fighting game with a new kind of battle system that enables players to move between upper and lower split-plane battle arenas to chase after or escape from opponents.

Play Flash Games on your Wii at WiiCade

July 7, 2007 on 7:25 am | In News | No Comments

WiiCade LogoYou just got a Nintendo Wii (lucky!) and you’re already tired of Wii Sports (crazy!). You want to sit down and play something a less intense, but what to do? Just open up the Opera-based Web browser on your Wii, and head over to WiiCade. WiiCade is a Flash gaming site with big bright buttons and an interface that fits right in with the Wii aesthetic. That’s no mistake: WiiCade is a Flash-game repository designed for Wii owners, and the games available on the site are some of the most popular from around the Web. Kick back, relax, and play “OMG Invaders” or “WiiJeweled” using your Wii-mote.

There are Flash games all over the Web, and lots of sites collect them, host them, and attempt to be a one-stop place to play as many as you like. The thing that makes WiiCade different is that the site design and the resolution of the Flash games (800 by 500 by default) are all carefully chosen to work with the Wii browser and to look good on your TV. All the games on the site are limited to Flash 7, due to the limitations Wii’s Opera browser, and the large, colorful buttons and large text are meant to be easily readable and clickable on the screen, when using a Wii-mote.

WiiCade Front

Additionally, the developers behind WiiCade have released an API that allows game designers to build Web and flash games that make special use of the Wii controller, so gamers can actually use the direction-pad and the buttons on the controller as functions in the game, rather than using the Wii-mote as a glorified mouse.

The collection of games at WiiCade is remarkably large, and you’ll find a number of old favorites there already, from the Warthog Launch game in which you pile grenades under a Warthog (a vehicle from the Halo games) and explode them to send the Warthog up and into aliens hovering in the air, to Wiijeweled, which is a badly redesigned Bejeweled with larger jewels and horrible sound effects.

WiiCade Warthog Launch

Flash game designers can register with the site to upload their games for play, and players can suggest games to be added to the catalog. That being said, the popular games ported to the site look the same as you’d find them anywhere else on the Web, and the same stupid Flash games are also available. There are good games, and really interesting ones, but you’ll have to dig to find them. In the end, WiiCade serves a dual purpose: it’s great time-wasting for Web-surfing Wii users, but it’s also a great way to kill time in the office playing the same games you might play on your Wii at home.

Nintendo Wii Super Smash Bros. Brawl: The Ultimate Character List

July 7, 2007 on 5:42 am | In News | No Comments

Wii Super Smash Bros. Brawl Potential Character List Let’s face it: The daily updates of the Smash Brothers website for Smash Bros. Brawl, the latest installment in the Smash Brothers series which is set to be released for the Wii later this year, is more than any Smash Brothers fan can ask for. Each day brings with it new information (whether it’s the introduction of a new feature such as assist trophies, or the makeover of a staple character), and ultimately brings us one step closer to the long anticipated sequel to Smash Bros. Melee. The site is updated with one piece of information a day, which is sometimes extended to include examples of the introduced feature (i.e.- when the Assist Trophy function was introduced, three examples were given of assist trophies).

However, the release date of this game is coming up fairly soon. The game is set to be released in Europe by September, by which time all the news we need on this game- not to mention first hand impressions of the game’s gameplay- should be presented to us.

So let’s say- for argument’s sake- that the game is released on September 21st. Today is July 6th. That means from July 6th to September 21st, Monday through Friday (the website is updated during the week), assuming that the site is updated every day, we have, after today, fifty four more days of news. Now that’s a decent amount of time to learn about new characters, items, trophies, etc., but at the rate we find out new characters, we may not have a complete roster of characters by the game’s release date.

Consider this: Since the site re-launched back on May 22nd- a whole thirty-one days of news- we have learned of two new characters (not including the characters shown in the E3 and other video)- Bowser and Zelda, both fighters in the previous Smash Bros. game. While we have other important information- four types of gameplay, the assist trophy option, and a promising musical score-, and will hopefully be receiving information on such features as online play, the site has failed to produce in the character department. And with three characters still to confirm from both demos (Snake from Metal Gear Solid, Meta Knight of Kirby fame, and the mysterious Zero Suit Samus), the possibility of us finding out the full roster of characters seems hopeless at this rate. Unless a new demo or a massive update is presented to us within the next fifty or so days, there’s no way that we’ll know who all the fighters are by the European launch.

It’s time to play the guessing game.

The following predictions are based on the trends I see developing in the making of this game (reviving old games such as Kid Icarus) and my own ideas of who should be in this game. Here are the characters I think we’ll see:

First, the characters I expect to come back:

Yoshi- a two-time veteran, Yoshi’s re-appearance is foreshadowed by the fact that his own level was confirmed.

Donkey Kong- another two-time veteran, Donkey Kong is essential for longtime Smash players who long for power, without the sluggishness of Bowser.

Ness- another two-time player who is fully expected to return.

Captain Falcon- Captain Falcon’s return is foreshadowed by an assist trophy of a character from one of his games.

Luigi- the brother of Mario will certainly be making his return, though it may be interesting to see how his character will change.

Mewtwo- though not the most played character in the game (from my experience), Mewtwo could be tweaked to be that much more effective and, in turn, popular.

Sheik- Sheik’s return is accepted, otherwise the Zelda character would be much harder to play with.

JigglyPuff- a two time veteran, Jiggly is a worthy foe if mastered right, and adds a lot of diversity to the game.

And now, the new characters I expect to see:

Geno- From Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars; I’m still keeping my hopes up that Geno will make his first appearance on a Nintendo console in eleven years, which would excite millions of gamers across the world. His mysterious aura and grand mystique lend themselves to the Smash Bros Brawl world.

MegaMan- I think we all can agree that it’s time for MegaMan to make his debut. A staple character in the Nintendo world in the eyes of many, MegaMan’s chances of entering the Smash Bros Brawl arena increased substantially when Snake arrived.

Simon Belmont- of Castlevania fame, Simon’s whip and array of potential Smash-friendly moves would fit in well.

Bill Rizer- of Contra fame; the debut of Rizer in Smash Bros. would coincide nicely with the eventual release of Contra 4 for the Nintendo DS.

Sonic- Another thing I tout besides online play for this series is the debut of Sonic. Although some people see the 2008 Beijing Olympics Game as the proper debut of Sonic in a Mario game, the overwhelming vote by fans to have Sonic is too powerful to ignore. Sonic brings with him speed (move over Fox), swift and powerful attacks, two great assist trophies in Tails and Knuckles, and a potentially awesome taunt. Sonic’s absence will undoubtedly bring both outrage and disappointment within many fans of both the series and of Sonic.

Little Mac - the protagonist of the Mike Tyson Punchout series. Revamping Little Mac’s image for Brawl could surprise many people, and make the game that much more well-rounded.

This brings the total number of characters in the game to twenty-seven, counting Sheik and Zero-Suit Samus as separate characters. This is a fair number, given the fact that, while characters are being added, some characters from Melee are not returning.

So there you have it. If these characters make the cut, expect Brawl to live up to everyone’s expectations.

‘Spyro’ Coming to Nintendo Wii This Fall; First Screenshots

July 7, 2007 on 5:41 am | In News | No Comments

Sierra Entertainment today announced ‘The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night,’ will be released on a variety of gaming platforms this fall, including Nintendo Wii as the lone next-gen version. The latest Spyro adventure will feature at least a dozen new types of attacks split between breath, elemental melee and fury. In addition, a new “Dragon Time” mode will take a cue from The Matrix and deliver a slow motion moments for Spyro to, “… dodge attacks, out-maneuver enemies or solve tricky time-based environmental puzzles.”

No mention is made in Sierra’s announcement on whether the Wii version will have unique motion-based on controls, but it’s a safe bet to assume it will. Look for more Spyro information in the weeks ahead.
